Lykill frá Stóra-Ási

If you’ve never had the pleasure of meeting this five-gaited red dragon, you should definitely make a point to come see him! Lykill is a vibrant and willing horse to observe, particularly under the guidance of his owner Laura Benson. He never seems to stop performing, whether on the track or in the field. From the proud carriage he maintains to the sparkle in his eye, you’ll find it hard to look away from this spirited horse.

His conformation scores verify what you might have already guessed in such a captivating stallion. With an 8.48 total, he was awarded an impressive 9 for head, neck-withers-shoulders, and proportions. The judges specifically praised his well set neck and high withers. He also received an 8 for back/croup and legs. Such key qualities are what we look for in promoting offspring that are set-up to naturally move well.

Lykill isn’t just pretty to look at though. He also performs well on the oval track. Just this last year, he and his partner Laura earned up to a 6.33 in F2 at a World Ranking show.

Further demonstrating his true Icelandic Horse spirit, Lykill has been a repeat team member of the Knights of Iceland Show Team. During performances, Lykill fills a variety of roles. Holding tight in a fast tempo 6-8 horse drill, standing quietly as Laura sings off of him while holding a torch, and pacing through a lane of fire are just a few highlights. In each performance he has been an excellent ambassador of everything we hope for and love in this breed.

Lykill’s dam, Nóta frá Stóra-Ási received an 8.25 overall in her breeding assessment earning her the title of first prize. Highlights from her evaluation included a 9 for spirit and an 8.5 for tölt and pace. The judges offered praise for her suppleness in combination with high action and speed. Though she wasn’t bred extensively, a fairly high percentage of her offspring faired well in assessments. Nine of her thirteen registered offspring received first prize, while two were a high second prize. This impressive performance as a broodmare earned her an honor prize title.

It’s worth noting that Lykill goes back to the impressive Gáski frá Hofsstöðum through Nóta’s lines. Gáski earned an 8.32 overall in his breeding evaluation, with a 9 for tölt and 8.5 for pace and trot. He also earned honor prize for the performance abilities of his offspring.

Lykill’s lineage from his direct sire, Fróði frá Staðartungu is also quite impressive. Fróði was able to earn first prize as a five year old. His highest overall marks in an evaluation totaled 8.59. During this assessment, Fróði received a 9 for tölt, pace, spirit, and general impression and an 8.5 for trot and gallop. If you’re looking for lines with good build, you should also note the conformation scores awarded to Fróði. He received an 8.5 for head, neck-withers-shoulders, back & croup, proportions. Particular praise was given to his high set neck. This is praise we also see in Lykill’s remarks.

Lykill’s sire didn’t just perform well on the breeding track. He also competed in the Gæðingakeppni A-Class in five gait at Landsmót in 2012. During this showing he received an 8.94 to take 1st position in the A finals!

As you can see, Lykill’s bloodlines connect him to several impressive horses. Multiple generations of both individual success and success in the breeding shed make him a particularly exciting prospect!

  • $800.00. A multiple mare discount is available!

  • Lykill is trained for collections, so we are able to offer both artificial insemination (AI) and live cover in-hand breedings.

  • He does have offspring in Iceland, however they haven’t yet been evaluated.

We have had the pleasure of meeting one of his US offspring. Though currently too young to be started under saddle, he already represents Lykill’s beautiful conformation, bright spirit, and affinity for tölt. We look forward to his development under saddle!
