Winter Training Pep Talk

Let’s be honest. Winter training can suck.

Here in KY, it’s been switching between dreary rain and winter snow storms. We’ve been stuck in the arena for what feels like an eternity. Most trainers I know struggle with depression this season, and that’s not surprising when you consider how physically tough and emotionally draining these conditions can be. So, this week’s training thoughts are as much of a pep talk for myself as they are for everyone else.

Here are several reminders I’m considering as I battle with the winter training blues…

Something is better than nothing. Maybe you can’t go on that trail ride, but maybe you can do some work hand with the bridle. Tiny bits of work still lay the foundation for your horse’s long term training success.

Plan your year and set goals that help motivate your winter training. Let your long term goals set your short term training directives. For example, maybe you want to include R+ training in your bridleless riding, so the winter months are a great time to introduce clicker training.

It’s okay to slow down. Many of us are plagued with guilt over missed training sessions .The fact of the matter is that we need breaks and so do our horses. Some conditions are also just unhealthy for training. Periods of rest are part of what makes our horses and ourselves capable of peak performance at other times of the year.

Seek out lessons. For me, I always feel energized by receiving good coaching. Nothing makes me more excited about training than a bit of inspiration. Book that lesson - show up - and see what happens. :)
