Taktur Trek in Iceland

For the second year in a row we will be accompanying a group of clients to Iceland to experience the Icelandic horse in its element. There is no feeling in the world like riding with a loose horse of over 50 horses through the stunning Icelandic landscape. The trek will be hosted by Hestaland and this route offers a unique blend of breathtaking mountain vistas, beautiful lakes and rivers, valleys full of lush green landscapes, and dramatic river crossings.

Thursday, August 20 — Arrival & Meet Your Horses

10:30 Meet at the BSI Bus Terminal in Reykjavik for transfer to Hestaland, stopping at Ástund tack store on the way 

12:30 Lunch at Hestaland

2:30 Report to the barn, where we’ll begin matching riders with horses that suit their experience level, and then head out on our first trail ride 

6:00 Dinner at Hestaland

Friday, August 21 — Trek Preparation in & Around the Farm

8:00-9:00 Breakfast buffet

9:00 Head to the barn to get paired with your second horse and go on another trail ride

12:00 Lunch at Hestaland

2:00  Head back to the barn for our final preparation trail ride

6:00 Dinner at Hestaland 

Saturday, August 22— Trekking Day 1

We’ll depart Hestaland with the herd and ride along Gufuá River. We cross the beautiful Hvítá River by way of the historic Hvítá bridge, riding along the Hvanneyri Agricultural University campus. We’ll ride by the Andakíls dam over into Skorradalur, a scenic valley, where we will leave the horses and end our first trekking day. 

Sunday, August 23 — Trekking Day 2

We ride through the stunning Skorradalur valley alongside the beautiful Skorradalur lake. We’ll make a stop at the end of the lake at the farm Fitjar before continuing down the lake on the opposite side of the valley for a short distance. We’ll then ride over the mountain into the parallel valley Lundareykjadalur, where we end the day at the farm Oddstadir.   

Monday, August 24 — Trekking Day 3

We will ride through Lundareykjadalur Valley along the river Grimsá, crossing it a few times. We go under the mountain Varmalækjarmúli to the river Flóka and to the farm Stóri Kroppur, where we end the day.  

Tuesday, August 25 — Trekking Day 4

We will return to the Flóka River for a short while before rejoining the Hvitá River, riding along its stunning banks. Then we will ride along Grímsá to Hólmavað, and from there we go back over the Hvítá River to Gufuá River and back home to Hestaland.  

Wednesday, August 26— Departure Day

8:00-9:00 Breakfast buffet

10:30 Depart Hestaland for BSI Bus Terminal in Reykjavik
